Bullets & Stock Tips

Ever since 1990 when I first attended Kent State, all my friends, acquiantences and strangers always had some kind of remark about the 1970 shootings. Lots of people told me things like “make sure you wear a bullet-proof vest” and “don’t get shot.” Never very clever, really, but still, I have to agree it’s a pretty easy joke to make. It also got old pretty quick. Whatever. But The Onion’s article this week actually did elicit a chuckle out of me, particularly the picture. Good stuff. I’ve laid off The Onion over the last year or so, so maybe I should start reading regularly again.

Stock tip? A few months back I started using Comcast’s OnDemand more than I had been previously. The reason? We cancelled Netflix when the babies were born, because the day they were born, the same four movies sat on the TV stand for about 3 months. It was a little sad, because I had been a member since June of 2000! But I couldn’t accept paying the monthly fee for dust collecting. We might subscribe again, but with Apple’s announcement and Comcast’s OnDemand, we may not need it.

Anyway, OnDemand requires a lot of backend…….stuff. That backend is powered by a company called SeaChange International, who handles OnDemand for many of the tier 1 and tier 2 cable companies in the U.S. I think it’s fairly clear that the cable companies will be a player in this stuff, so growth seems imminent. Now might be the time to hop on board SeaChange and get some stock – it’s at a very cheap price right now and they also just announced another deal with a top 5 cable TV provider. So I added them to my stable.

As a sidenote, 2 out of 3 companies I’m invested in are within 15 miles of my house. That’s one way to support the local businesses, I suppose.

No, No, No

The AirMall series continues….

Well, there’s dumb, there’s dumber and then there’s this:

Branding meat

Are you serious? Branding your meat? I’m not even sure I can come up with anything to say that would accurately justify how ridiculous this is. Does someone feel the need to stamp their initials on every hamburger they cook? I suppose if you had a sense of humor, you could get a brand that said something funny like “Grade D” or “RIP Kitty,” but even then………you’re spending close to $100 bucks for this crap? I’m just shaking my head about this one. Meat branding. Can’t help but laugh about that one.

Get Up, Stand Up

Today shall be the second installment of why the SkyMall amuses me to no end.

The topic is alarm clocks. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always set my alarm clock to be extremely loud. I don’t mess around with getting up. If I want to get up at 6:30am, then the clock is set for 6:30am. I’m not one of those people who need to set their clocks at 6am and hit snooze 400 times. Nope. I don’t do snooze. I’m happy to report that I have never in my life touched a snooze button. Lots of people don’t believe me, but it’s 100% true. Never. Ever.

That said, Stephanie has introduced me to the idea of not setting the clock at eardrum shattering volumes and still having success getting up. So I’m not a loud-clock setter so much anymore. But my clock is set louder than hers. I don’t know how she wakes up for her alarm. Oh wait, I do know – she hits snooze a few times.

Anyway, the SkyMall offers this disaster of a wake-up method:

Alarm Clock

This is SO wrong on so many levels. First off, the last thing I want when I get up is the stress of having to chase shit around my room, especially shit that rolls around (potentially under my bed) and makes a lot of noise. Secondly, it’s probably not best for your physical well being to get up scrambling and chasing. Those first few moments you wake up are not so much unlike being a little drunk – you’re at your most uncoordinated and prone to sleepy collisions with things like beds, trunks, walls or dressers.

Who buys this shit?

Please Kick This Guy’s Ass!

So I’m on a plane heading home this afternoon and I’ve just more or less completed a 37-page RFP. Translation: I don’t feel like working on the plane. And I don’t have a magazine to read – a rarity. So, I’m faced with the prospect of sitting there like a lump, focusing on what’s coming out of my Ipod, reading the USAir monthly magazine, leafing through the Duty Free catalog, or checking out SkyMall. Naturally, I check out SkyMall. Because it is the most ridiculous of the options.

Now, I’ve cruised through the SkyMall magazine before. It’s always good for a few chuckles, but today I really paid attention and discovered that some of this stuff is not only retarded, but I’ve never, EVER seen anyone use some of it. I mean, what would you think if you saw this guy?

Please Kick This Guy's Ass

Please kick this guy’s ASS if you see him! I know I would NEVER buy this and actually use it on a plane. But then I got to thinking – what if I did buy it, use it and take photos of myself doing it? So I’ve done what any enterprising blogger would do – I took the catalog with me and over the next few weeks I’ll be highlighting some of the most insane products I’ve ever seen. I’m open to the idea of actually buying a bunch of it (picture above included) and going out and using the stuff that I buy and documenting it here, but then I thought it might be a waste of money. Unless, of course, my reader(s) are willing to contribute. You help buy, I will go out in public and try it. That’s a deal. If you’re up for it, let me know and I’ll set up a contributions thing via PayPal or something. It could be hilarious!

By the way, I’m still screen-grabbing TV characters, too. I think that blog feature has promise. Stay tuned.
