Saturday night appears to be my night to channel surf late. See, Steph and I have a system. On Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, she gets the boys up, dressed and gets them their bottle. I take Saturday, Monday and Friday. Wednesday is the swing day and we switch week-to-week. It works well. That means Sunday is my day to “sleep in.” I use quotes because sleeping in these days means I’m lucky if I stay asleep until 8.

That said, Saturday night is my night to stay up a little late. Like 11pm. Chuckle. So anyway, I’m channel-hopping and on PBS, I come across the never-before-aired Queen show in Montreal from 1981. This was the year that Queen took a turn for the worse when they released “The Game,” but up until then they had released several pretty impressive records. “The Game” had “Another One Bites The Dust” on it, which was Queen effectively saying, “ok, here’s our disco-rock song and we’ll never make another good album again. Promise.”

All that out of the way, it’s not much of a secret how good Queen were live. Very talented musicians. And Freddie Mercury, well, his voice was on another level altogether. But sometimes you can’t help but laugh at how……gay he was. Now, let it be said here in no uncertain terms that I have no problem with gay people. I can’t figure out why its any big deal if it’s legal they get married and the whole nine yards. Whatever. We have more important things to worry about. Your private life is your private life. But man, Freddie Mercury was GAY! So I took a picture of the television:

Freddie Mercury

Yeah, he’s shirtless. And sockless. And he’s wearing very short white shorts and a red bandana around his neck. He hadn’t even really come out yet, depending on who you ask and what you read.

Anyway, it doesn’t matter. The show was pretty electrifying and well-worth an hour or two. When they tear into “Tie Your Mother Down,” it doesn’t matter if the whole band is gay – that’s as good and hard a rock song as you’ll hear from the 1970’s.
